IIncreasing restrictions on UK travelers are raising concerns for festive holidays around the world as countries work to curb the spread of the omicron variant.

Over the weekend, Germany followed in France’s footsteps by announcing a ban on most British travelers. As of Sunday evening, only German citizens or residents have been able to enter the country from the UK and are required to self-quarantine for two weeks, regardless of their vaccination status.

European countries are also increasing their national restrictions. The Netherlands has been plunged into a complete lockdown with non-essential shops, bars and restaurants all closing as of today.

Meanwhile, Ursula Von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, said the European Union should consider imposing PCR tests on all travelers entering from outside the bloc. She called on EU leaders at a summit in Brussels on Thursday to introduce pre-departure and second post-arrival testing as part of a bloc-wide strategy to contain the highly contagious variant of the coronavirus.

Further afield, Thailand plans to end the quarantine vacation. Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told a local news program about potential plans to return hotels to quarantine and the “sandbox” program, which allows travel to certain locations.
