An Essex pub remained open whilst police investigated a death in the hotel upstairs, it has emerged.

Emergency services were called to The Bottle Kiln Wetherspoons pub, situated on Kingsway, Harwich, shortly before 11am on December 20, 2021.

Upon arrival, they discovered that a man in his 50s, had sadly been found dead in his hotel room.

It has been confirmed that the man was sadly found deceased by a cleaner, who informed the pub’s manager.

The Bottle Kiln pub remained open for punters while police conducted their investigations, Wetherspoons has confirmed.

The man’s death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “ We can confirm that a guest staying in the hotel at The Bottle Kiln in Harwich was found dead in his room.

“He was found by a cleaner who alerted the pub manager.

“The police gave permission for the pub to remain open while they undertook their investigation.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the relatives and friends of the deceased man.

“We will assist the police in any way possible.”

A spokesperson for Essex Police added: “We were called to Kingsway, Harwich at around 10.52am on Monday, December 20 following reports a man, 50s, had sadly been found deceased.

“His death is being treated as non-suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
