A bid to build more than 240 flats for Cambridge University students has been recommended for approval.

Cambridge City Council’s planning committee will next week vote on whether the university’s application for 245 new flats, by St John’s College, should be approved.

Planned to be built on land off Wilberforce Road, the new rooms will be created across four accessible houses and 35 townhouses and would support an increasing demand.

The buildings are described as being high quality and sustainable, with the proposals designed in a way that “responds sensitively” to the West Cambridge context.

The landscaping also plays a big part in the plans, with the application describing the proposed site as being conceived as a “garden sanctuary” in the city.

It adds that the gardens would be embedded in the wider landscape that surrounds the site, so much so that the buildings become “secondary” to the planting and trees.

The proposed accommodation would not only be for students, but some staff as well.

In a statement submitted to the city council as part of the planning application, St John’s College highlighted the need it said there is for the new accommodation.

It said: “The College faces increasing demands for accommodation for several elements of the College community namely undergraduates, postgraduates, post-doctoral researchers, Fellows and staff.

“The type of accommodation each group requires varies, but generally undergraduates and postgraduates occupy single rooms, whilst post-doctoral researchers, Fellows and staff are more likely to have partners/children and so often require larger ‘family accommodation’ with gardens, which the College struggles to provide from existing stock.

“While many Fellows wish to purchase houses in Cambridge, they face increasing difficulties in doing so.

“Many ask the College to provide accommodation at least for a few years when they are first appointed while they find their feet in the Cambridge housing market and make a decision about a possible purchase.”

St John’s College also plans to let some of the accommodation to other Colleges.

The application has been recommended for approval by planning officers and councillors are due to meet next week on January 12, to discuss the application.
