Coronavirus cases have continued to rise across Cambridgeshire over the new year, the latest government data shows.

On Sunday, January 8, the government reported that Covid cases across the UK had risen by more than 1.2m in the last week – a rise 10 per cent higher than that of the previous week.

In the East of England, there have been 108,751 new cases over the last seven days, equivalent of 1,735 per 100,000 people.

The rise comes as doctors warn that contracting Covid alongside flu – a phenomenon dubbed ‘flurona’ – may be more likely to make a patient seriously ill than if they caught Covid alone.

In north-east Cambridge, rates are particularly high in the area encompassing Milton, Chesterton, Fen Ditton and Horningsea, the most recent data shows.

Rates are also high further east in Burwell and Newmarket, as well as to the west in Longstanton and Cottenham. Huntingdon, Ramsey, Whittlesey, St Ives and March also have high rates in surrounding areas.

This area-specific data only extends as far as January 3, it should be noted. Below you will find the number of cases in each blackspot across Cambs and Peterborough for the seven days up to that date.

A ‘blackspot’ is an area where the case rate exceeds 1,600 cases per 100,000 people in the population. The rest of the region has 400+ cases per 100,000.
